lunch ideas?! 251/365

You might have noticed that I missed Menu Monday this week. I actually wanted to post a question:
What types of snacks or sandwiches do you pack in the kids lunch?

Leave an idea or two and you might just receive something special from A Shot Of Life!! (bribery works with my kids…it might work with my friends, family & clients too, right?)

here’s what I’ve done….pretzels, sliced oranges, grapes, cheese and crackers, honeycombs, choclate sprinkles on bread (what’s the dutch word?) yogurt cup.
things I will probably do…..mini marshmallows, rice crispies squares, meat and cheese sandwiches, jam sandwiches (no peanut butter though) prepackaged stuff (ritz crackers with cheese filling, goldfish) Oh, there are so many options!!

Mel… the ritz crackers with cheese filling are processed in a facility that has peanuts… they are a no-no in peanut free schools ( I learned this one the hard way).
Mike makes lunches… but he does the following… fruit, mini carrots, crackers, sweet cereal (froot loops or whatever), mini muffins, apple sauce cups, etc
For sandwiches… Grace and Calvin take cheese on a tortilla EVERY DAY! Griffin usually has meat sandwiches or some sort of leftover that is good cold.

we’ve only done this a few times yet.. but Micah takes a whole wheat bun or a sandwich w meat and cheese, and then he has a cuople different kinds of fruit/vegetables which I cut up so it’s easy to eat (and alot easier to pack!) then he has a couple minin muffins which he saves for the bus ride home cause they don’t have an afternoon snack. (I made a bunch of them a while back and I just throw them in his lunch frozen , they thaw fairly quickly) for snacks – cookies, crackers, or pretty much whatever. and micah’s school has a litterless lunch policy so I have to avoid pre-packaged snacks as much as possible. His last school had the same policy, I think it’s great because it forces parents to pack healthier stuff for their kids!
were lucky this year, cause this school doesn’t have the no-nut policy. but those of you that do, there is a new product in the grocery store, it’s a soy-based butter, that supposively looks and tastes just like peanut butter. but if you use it you need to mark on the lunch pail what it is.

Here is what I try to do:
morning snack – cut up fruit (strawberrie, apple, pear, peach etc) or apple sauce
lunch – sandwich (with usually jam or hagelslag (sprinkles)) or a cold pancake
also a yoghurt or drinkable yoghurt and some pieces of cheese (use a small cookie cutter to make the cheese in shapes) carrots
afternoon snack – crackers (some times with cheese) or rice crispie square or mini muffin
Sometimes I put a little note in the lunchpail – the kids love that.
Our school likes litterless lunches as well, in a way it saves you too buying in ‘bulk’ is cheaper.
Have fun making lunches

Gerda…that’s such a cute idea…cutting the cheese into shapes! He’ll love it!
Great idea’s ladies! thanks!
Here are somethings I’ve done:
Standard/staple granola bar
raspberries/apples/grapes
dunkeroos’ (not litterless but he thinks he’s awesome when I pack it!)
crackers & cheese
sandwiches with honey or dutch cheese
pretty boring/standard at this point…

Hi Dawn,
I’m new to packing school lunches, but so far I have found that my son really enjoys the meat and cheese wraps that I send. Somehow a sandwich just seems to be more exciting when it’s rolled up! I have also used a large cookie cutter to make shapes out of sandwiches made with bread! The kraft web-site has lunch ideas and has printable jokes to pack!

Wraps are a great idea Paula! I’ll ask E if he would like that! I know his cousins eat that often…we rarely have them here! Cookie cutters too…so cute!
Here is the link to the jokes: (thanks for the tips Paula)!
